5: SAMPLE DREAM INTERPRETATIONS
Representative sample of other people’s dreams that we have interpreted.
DREAM 1: Chewing Gum
I always have this dream: I'm chewing a wad of gum and I'm trying to spit it out. It is stuck to my gums and teeth. I keep pulling the wad and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. I think this dream means I'm probably sleeping with my mouth open and my tongue is drying out.
INTERPRETATION:
Ok, this is what I make of your dream – however, it isn’t recent so it’s difficult to relate it to what is currently upper most in your mind. That you frequently have this dream suggests an unresolved issue. Let’s take chewing gum. Think of the expression “to chew over” which means ‘to give careful consideration’ to something. So when you have this dream it probably relates to you ‘chewing’ something over. Only chewing gum isn’t digestible, it can’t be eaten, which suggests you are chewing over some issue which never gets resolved. That the wad of gum gets bigger maybe means that the act of chewing inflates the issue so that it gets too big to cope with. Does that make any sense at all? Ring any bells? Do you sometimes find it difficult to make decisions, perhaps?
Note: The dreamer agreed that s/he found it difficult to make decisions. The reasons for this were teased out by interpreting subsequent dreams for the client.
DREAM 2: Selling
I was in a house that belonged to me and was wanting to sell it. The house was modern but large and sprawling and somewhat untidy. I didn't think that the house would sell although not sure of the reason for that - maybe I didn't feel it was in good repair. The next thing that happened is that several strangers came in to my house and they criticised it and seemed to confirm my fears that the house wasn't suitable for selling.
The thing is that in real life I am going to be selling my house, so I'm wondering if that dream is telling me something about my plans for my real house.
INTERPRETATION:
I don't think this relates at all to the fact that you are selling your own house. I think it is likely to have more to do with selling your idea and beliefs and things. You know, when you tell someone about some idea you have, and they say, 'I don't buy it!' I think it is that sort of buying and selling.
So I wonder if it has something to do with self-confidence. It might even relate to joining in discussions on the internet. It might be saying that you lack confidence about 'selling' your ideas, and so you are maybe not as open, or forthright as you would like to be?
The strangers coming into your house would then be other people's ideas and opinions that are different from yours, and so 'strangers', and if other people are expressing ideas that seem to contradict yours, and they write with confidence, then it may be that they are undermining your confidence, and making it even more difficult for you to be as open as you would like.
DREAM 3: The Dentist
I am at the dentist. He is giving me a filling. Before starting the treatment he gives me an injection of local anaesthetic. I remark to the dentist that the injection was unusual in that it was totally painless – I didn’t feel a thing.
INTERPRETATION:
A conversation with the dreamer revealed the context to the dream. The dreamer had been having difficulty making progress with a project she had set herself. She was unable to ‘get her teeth into’ the project and was anxious about this. One particular reason she was anxious was that the project was part of a long term goal the dreamer was working towards. The dreamer had received advice, or been ‘filled in’, about what was causing the blockage. The information, containing some adverse criticism, was essential if the dreamer was to make further progress with the project. However, the information was imparted in such a tactful manner that the dreamer felt no discomfort whatsoever.
